Sheffield Invitation futsal tournament great success

The Sheffield Invitation futsal tournament took place over a whole day on Saturday 23rd November at Hillsborough Leisure Centre and saw many of the UK’s top futsal teams participating. Tranmere Victoria won the tournament with the County FA team as runners up. Scoreline 4-0.

Both the FA and FIFA had representatives at the tournament (Dermot Collins representing the FA and Victor Beceiro representing FIFA). There were also members of the British Universities Sport’s Association present. The future of futsal in England was discussed with some very encouraging points being raised.

Victor Beceiro stated that futsal’s rate of growth around the globe was far greater than expected and that they were confident that futsal would become the second most popular international sport, second only to football.

Victor also re-affirmed that futsal was the only five-a-side game that FIFA recognised and that they would support the FA in developing the refereeing and coaching programmes necessary for the development of the game in England.

The possibilities of establishing a national team was also discussed.
