Clitheroe (ENG)

The PESL Futsal Cup is an annual event, taking place every August in Clitheroe, North-west England. A total of 15 teams from across the region have taken part in the event and the tournament has expanded every year to allow for the increase in interest in the competition. This year it is set to grow further with 16 teams taking part.

Craig Brown and Damon Shaw founded the PESL 5-a-side cup in 2003. After months of planning the vision became reality and August of that year saw the first ever PESL tournament, held at the Snake Pit. Eight teams contested for the trophy in two groups of four, followed by the knockout stages. The historic first ever winners were Aragon, a team which included both Shaw and Brown, as they beat Stanley Arms 5-2 in the final. It was an appropriate end to the tournament, as recognition of all the work put in by them.

PESL has evolved rapidly, with last year seeing an expansion to 12 teams, the birth of the official website and all matches being filmed. A presentation evening held at Accrington Stanley Football Club nicely rounded off what had been another hugely successful tournament, with Malia Massive of Preston being crowned champions.

The PESL Futsal Cup 2005 kicks off on the 2nd August and runs through to the final game on the 28th August, with matches being played Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. This years winners also have the chance to play a match against the current UK champions, Doncaster College for the Deaf on the 4th September in the PESL Super Cup. All the results will appear on www.pesl5.net and you will also be able to see them here on Futsal Planet.

There are still a few places available for teams based in the North-west of England so if you are interested go to www.pesl5.net for more information.
