Grimsby Town FCGrimsby Town Futsal Secure FA Cup Second Round Place17 April 2018Grimsby Town futsal secured their passage to Round 2 of the FA Futsal Cup, as they defeated Durham Futsal 5-2 at Grimsby Institute in front of a sell-out crowd of 215.
The Mariners got off to the perfect start when James Blunden struck after some neat combination play between himself and Captain, Jack Burrows. Burrows then got on the scoresheet, as he unleashed an unstoppable effort past the Durham keeper. Jan Meiwald added a third, for The Mariners before Durham blew a chance to get back in the game before half time from the penalty spot after Town reached 6 fouls.
Durham began the second half with the bit between their teeth, and it paid dividends when both strikers struck within the space of 8 second half minutes, to reduce the deficit to a single goal. In timely fashion, Grimsby’s Dan Marshall rolled back the years and found the back of the net, to regain Grimsby’s two-goal cushion.
Just like the first half, Grimsby reached the 6 foul mark, and handed Durham two opportunities from the penalty spot. However, Lait in the Grimsby goal kept them out with two fine saves, to the delight of his team mates, and the bumper crowd in attendance at Grimsby College.
Alex Aldrich sealed the victory for the Mariners, as he swept home an emphatic free-kick from close range with only moments remaining.
Grimsby goalscorer James Blunden spoke post match, and felt that both sides played some excellent Futsal, and the large number of GTFC fans spurred them on to get the victory. “I thought the game was a very good one. Both sides put on a good display of Futsal for the large number of fans. The game went well for us especially, and that’s why we’re in the next round.
The fans helped a lot. For me personally I thrive off that, and so did the boys, they were brilliant”.
This victory means Grimsby Town Futsal continue their journey in the FA Futsal cup, with the draw for Round 2 to be made in the coming days.
