Sport a powerful tool for change

Soccer event to educate the community of the dangers of substance Abuse, HIV, aids and gender based violence.

February 1, 2017

On Saturday, 28 January, the Wawa Men/ Boys’ programme was in full swing, teaching kids life-skills while they were enjoying what they love most – playing soccer.

The purpose of this event was to educate the community about the dangers of substance abuse, HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence.

Enrico Bhana said, “We don’t discriminate and all are welcome to come and play. We invite men and boys from the Randfontein dumping site, Mohlakeng and the surrounding areas. We aim to promote a healthy lifestyle, free voluntary testing for HIV infection and, most importantly, youth participation in sport.”

Bhana said further: “Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday to support community football. We are going to look after our facilities and we need the community to assist us to keep our boys and girls busy with constructive things.”

“Sport is a perfect tool to do that!” said Wilton (Charra) Cupido.
“We are tired of talking; it’s time to take our community back and give our peers the opportunity to play in a safe space and nurture their talents,” said Keegan Stamper.

“We will keep the community posted on when the next event for all age groups will take place, so please watch this space,” said Bhana.

They are also planning to open a league for all age groups and need sponsors for the upkeep of the facility, soccer kit and equipment to help them make it possible.

For more information, call Wilton Cupido (Toekies Futsal kids) or Keegan Stamper (WAWA Men and Boys’ Coordinator) on 011 693 4504 or Facebook Wawa Toekomsrus.
