Futsal Fever Grips Nadi

Defending champions Y Maro are drawn in a tough pool of the 3rd Island Pacific Apparel sponsored FUTSAL tournament to be staged at Nadi Muslim College ground this weekend. They are pooled with unknown teams like Breeze Marketing Cosmos 3, North Pole Friends and D.D.K Boys.

Tournament co-ordinator Nadeem Mohammed said yesterday the two-day competition would see 64 teams being placed in 16 pools.

“We got 64 teams that are taking part, we started with 32 teams in 2014 and the previous year we had 43 teams and this year is a milestone achievement,” he told SUNsports. “Looking at the number of teams that have come, this will definitely provide a high level of Futsal competition comes Saturday and Sunday.”

Mohammed said teams won’t be taking their games lightly and for the first time they are introducing the Fiji Sun sponsored-Masters competition.

“This is the first time we are having the Fiji Sun Masters competition and we are starting off with eight teams.”

Mohammed thanked Islands Pacific Apparels, Fiji Sun and their supporters from Canada for sending trophies and medals for the winners. Island Pacific Apparel sales and marketing manager Sunil Chand said they are proud to be involved in sponsoring the tournament.

“We are the major sponsor and we have increased it to $2,500 and are proud to back a high profile tournament on western soil,” Chand added.
