Jack BiantanThe Cagayan de Oro City Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association (COAA) high school girls Futsal team swept all their opponents in the recently-concluded Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association meet to win the gold at Sagay town gymnasium in the island Paradise of Camiguin.
The lady footballers were manned by players from Xavier University, Corpus Christi High School, Rosevale School, St. Mary’s School and PN Roa High School and won against Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental teams in the elimination round to advance to the semis.
The team then defeated Valencia in the semis and won the gold when they beat Bukidnon province in the battle for the gold medal. Members of the team are Munich Muring, Eunice Eduave, Lourinne Lazo and Megan Wong of Xavier University, Coline Acelo, Patricia Ching and Andrea Cabactulan of St. Mary’s School, Melgrace Camarillo of PN Roa High School, Cristy Tago of Corpus Christi High School and Louisse Peregrine Bongocan of Rosevale School.
Coaches are Luisito Maagad and Lorenzo Turrecha of Xavier University. The COAA elementary boys team, meanwhile, secured the bronze medal after defeating Gingoog City, 2-0 at Balbagon Sports Complex in Mambajao. The COAA kids led early in the semis but failed to hold on and bowed out 1-2 against the kids from Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School of Camp Phillips, Bukidnon.
Bukidnon won the title over Lanao del Norte. The city’s high school boys team bowed out in the semis when they suffered a heart-breaking penalty shootout defeat against Malaybalay City.
The team then extended their suffering in the battle for third losing to Misamis Occidental in another penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the regulation. Valencia City eventually won the gold over Malaybalay.
