York City futsal team make it eight wins from eight

YORK City Futsal surged to an eighth successive win as they saw off Manchester Academy 5-0 at the University of York Sports Arena, writes TOM HARLE.

The pattern of the win was decidedly different to last week’s seven-goal triumph over Loughborough and, with the Minstermen missing three key players, several emerging youngsters were afforded extended game time.

There were some usual suspects on the scoresheet, however, as the goals were shared between James Briars, Miguel de Vicente, Fabinho Almeida, Joe Iggulden and Jamie Bettson.

Despite keeper Phil Codd being called into action early on following an interception, Briars opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a neat exchange with Bettson and stand-in skipper de Vicente got his ninth of the season from range to make it 2-0.

Junior Roberti’s side weren’t able to extend their lead before half-time and Manchester came close at the back post, only for Almeida to nip a comeback in the bud seconds after the interval with a low left-footed strike.

York maintained the pressure as Connor Watson and Adam Richmond forced a fine double save, before quickfire efforts from Bettson and youngster Iggulden, firing home first-time from a misplaced pass, sealed the points.

In their last outing before the New Year, City were heartened by the return of captain Daniel Pedras from injury for the last minute of the contest.

They were unable to call on the services of England man Jamie Bettson- due to an ongoing heel complaint - but he should be back for the next game against Derby in January with Roberti believing that a win in that game should wrap up the National Futsal League’s north division two title.

York, who boast a 100 per cent record, are eight points clear of nearest rivals Derby with a game in hand and Roberti added: “We gave opportunities to people that have not been playing that much and knew that would change the dynamic of the game, but a team to win a game is not necessarily the team to win a league.”
