Tom LloydImPACT Applications, an organisation set up to safeguard against and provide solutions for brain injury in sport, has unveiled landmark partnerships with English soccer’s Football Association (FA) and the International Football and Futsal Development Campus (IFFDC).
Both the FA and the IFFDC, the governing body behind futsal in the UK, will use ImPACT’s standards and technology as part of their concussion management protocols during play, and will use ImPACT to educate team physios on giving better return-to-play decisions.
On top of this, ImPACT will also use the partnerships to conduct extensive research on head injuries within soccer and futsal.
“In our efforts to develop the highest standards of player health and safety, the FA is pleased to put ImPACT Applications software in place for its England’s men’s and women’s game,” said Dr Charlotte Cowie, head of performance medicine at the FA.
Gary Sloane, director of football operations at IFFDC, added: “In football, players used to treat possible head injury more lightly.
What is rugby doing to prevent brain injury?“Now, its viewed differently, and the IFFDC is keen on raising awareness around concussions. We wanted to work with the best partner who would take us in the right direction in planning our concussion management protocol and ImPACT Applications was the obvious choice.”
The deal comes just six months after the FA began baseline testing on its national teams, and comes as concussion in soccer becomes an increasingly important issue.
