Genesis Of Futsal Success

A team of eight local futsal players are Australia’s best.

Genesis Christian College’s girls under-13 team is the national champion after going through its latest tournament undefeated.

The team of Jade Dethlefs, Lilly Maieroni, Jaeve Proberts, Georgia Beaumont, Tamika Smith, Jaimee Day, Amy Vorster and Ella Smith won all six of its games at the Australasian Champion of Champions tournament, held at Oxley Futsal Centre from 25-27 November.

The team won the tournament, hosted by the Australian Futsal Association, with a commanding 10-1 win over Gold Coast’s St Andrews Lutheran College in the final.

Genesis College, whose smallest winning margin was a 5-0 triumph over Mansfield State High School, scored 56 goals and conceded just three times over six games.

On top of that, Genesis players filled four of the five spots in the tournament’s All-Star team, with Beaumont, Vorster, Dethlefs and Maieroni gaining selection.

The Genesis team, whose players hail from Joyner, Cashmere, Warner, Strathpine and Clear Mountain, progressed to the Australasian titles after winning the Southern Queensland and South-East Queensland championships.

Coach David Kregenbrink said football combinations forged outside the school grounds helped the team.

He said the girls play outdoor football together at the Moreton Bay Jets club, and also in five-a-side competition at Albany Creek.

“There’s a great chemistry between the players which was evident in the way that they played at the tournament,” he said.

“I knew they were extremely capable (players) and I was confident that they could do well at that level.”

Albany Creek State High School’s boys under-13 team finished second in its tournament.

Corinda State High School defeated Albany Creek 6-5 in the gold medal game.

The seven-team competition featured teams from Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Sunshine Coast.

Albany Creek finished on top of the standings after six round-robin games, with five wins and one loss.
