The StarBest of the best for Bangkok stintMonday, 5 December 2016As part of the finale to the Milo Hidup Bola campaign, 12 of the top-performing players from the Under-16 teams at the grand finals were selected by national futsal coach Chiew Chun Yong for an exclusive five-day training stint in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of a talent scouting system.
Those chosen are Wan Ikram Amir Wan Mohd Zamri,16, Iskandar Harun, 16, Muhammad Afiq Miswan, 15, Muhammad Zharif Nazhan Refli, 16, Amirul Fazly Mohd Zamri, 16, Arham Khussyairi Abdul Wahab, 16, Ariff Shaqirin Suhaimi, 16, Shivan Pillay Lasokan, 16, Muhammad Syahmi Zamri, 16, Danial Fikri Roslan, 16, Muhamad Feroz Baharudin, 16 and Muhammad Izreen, 16.
The youths will attend four local training camps with the national coach before heading to Bangkok, where they will hone their skills under Thai coaches and instructors in hopes of helping them become professional players in the future.
The culmination and highlight of their training in Bangkok is a friendly championship, where they will be able to test their skills against top local youth futsal teams.
Last year’s Hidup Bola futsal team, who underwent the same programme, stunned their Thai counterparts in the friendly championship which featured some of the best Under-16 futsal teams in Thailand.
With an entirely new group of players this year, Chiew has a figurative blank canvas in his hands.
“The 12 players were selected during the grand finals based on their level of technique and skill as well as their physical condition with emphasis on their speed,” Chiew said.
He added that their techniques, physical condition and speed were not up to expectations yet, but those were not reasons to complain.
“We picked the best available to us and we will get them ready for the training in Thailand and their friendly matches against the Thai teams.
“With less than a week from the grand finals to their training stint, it will be about trying to get 12 youths from different teams working together as a team
“We will focus on defence and how to execute the change from defence to attack as well as their techniques.
“I will see how they cope in training and I will come up with a short-term plan to make this team gel well,” he said, emphasising that understanding as a team is the key.
