Dept of Electrical Services deliver shocking futsal win

November 26, 2016

by Fadhil Yunus

DEPARTMENT of Electrical Services (DES) finally broke the non-media organisation hoodoo after clinching the Futsal Championship in conjunction with Information Department’s 64th year of establishment title with a 4-2 victory over the Prime Minister’s Office Media at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Futsal Hall yesterday.

It was a fitting end for DES who had earlier knocked out reigning holders Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) in the group stages.

No non-media team have emerged victorious in previous years but reigning holders Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) and 2014 winners Media Permata fell in the first hurdle.

Prime Minister’s Office Media were the lone media organisation survivor in the last four.

The tournament was notably known in featuring both media and non-media teams and this year the media teams were comprised of hosts Information Department, RTB, Prime Minister’s Office Media, Government Photography, Media Permata and Borneo Bulletin.

The non-media teams included DES, E-Government National Centre, Anti-Corruption Bureau, State Judiciary Department, Audit Department and Management Services Department.

Sofri Yahya of DES, who scored his team’s fourth after latching a wonderful assist by Faizul which all but sealed the title, scooped the Best Player award.

Prime Minister’s Office Media have earlier reduced arrears after Pengiran Haji Waliyuddin Pengiran Haji Ahmad tapped in from close range moments after Md Aimi Safwan Zalidin had rattled the crossbar.

DES’s Yusri bin Yaakub, who was a constant menace throughout the final, surged past the defence and even squared the keeper but could not prevent the ball from going out of the pitch.

2014 finalists EGNC and Anti-Corruption Bureau shared joint third place after losing in the semi-finals by virtue of penalties.

Prior to the final, DES were one spot kick away from elimination but they recovered to win 3-2 after the scores had stayed goalless in normal time.

Meanwhile, Anti-Corruption Bureau missed a good chance as Md Ayyub orchestrated a slick individual move but scuffed his shot comfortably wide with the opposition goalkeeper committed.

Abdul Kifli also produced a tame shot for Anti-Corruption Bureau in the early stages of the first half with the Prime Minister’s Office Media goalkeeper able to recover his starting position.

The second semi-final also ended goalless but the Prime Minister’s Office Media had their goalkeeper to thank for after producing an instinctive save from an Md Ayyub’s long range effort.

Prime Minister’s Office Media player Zul Fakhri Maidy settled the contest with the decisive spot-kick in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win after Mohd Salleh Abdullah missed in sudden death.

Presenting the prizes was Aminuddin bin Haji Buntar, Acting Director of Management Services.
