Nick ReginaNovember 22, 2016Staten Island soccer players will get its first official futsal league to stay sharp in the winter months. The new loop is affiliated with U.S. Futsal and U.S. Youth Futsal is getting set to kick off.
The Staten Island Futsal league founder, Ernest Murdukhayev, who also serves as director of sports and recreation at the Jewish Community Center, where all the games will be held, hopes to bring awareness to the sport.
Futsal is similar to soccer, but different in many aspects. The game is played indoors with a smaller ball and only five players on each side.
"Futsal is very different than soccer, but also features many of the same skills," said Murdukhayev. "We hope to help soccer players develop their skills during the offseason."
"There's really not much for soccer players to do in the winter," he added. "We aim to hopefully compete in national in regional tournaments as well."
The league is still accepting teams and individual players for the upcoming season.
