Radio KFDIWichita opens futsal courtIt was built at Fairmount ParkNov 14, 2016
Wichita vice-mayor Lavonta Williams joined park and recreation officials Monday for the opening of a new facility for the sport of futsal, which is similar to soccer.
Fustal is played with two teams of five players each, and it's played with a smaller ball that has less bounce than a soccer ball. The game is also played on a smaller, hard court surface.
A tennis court was renovated at Fairmount Park, converting half of it into a futsal court. Williams said the sport is gaining in popularity in Kansas, and the new court will serve a diverse student population at Wichita State University. She said the court will have state of the art lighting with bleachers for spectators, and it will provide an opportunity for future tournaments.
Wichita State mascot WuShock and the city's park and recreation mascot, Barry the Bison, took part in the ceremony to open the court.
