Parks and Rec to offer futsal

Saturday, October 8, 2016

The Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Department found itself with a rented gym and some spare time, but not for long.

The department will be offering futsal, a variation of soccer, to be played at the Thorn Hill Center gym on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.

“We’ve bought two pop-up goals and soccer balls,” said John Arnett, program developer with the Parks Department. “We’re ready to go.”

There will be two leagues, 12-under and 14-under. The program is being headed by league commissioner Mark Trivette, an assistant coach with the Frankfort High boys soccer team who played soccer at FHS and St. Catharine College.

“We started going indoors about two or three years ago,” Trivette said about the FHS boys team. “We get the high school kids to come out, and it’s optional.

“The ball is heavier, and it bounces about half as much as a regular ball. The game has a lot of quick passes, a lot of touches, a lot of skill.”

The ball used in futsal is also slightly smaller than a regulation soccer ball, and heading the ball is not allowed in futsal.

There will be no goalkeepers in the local leagues, and the goal is 4 by 6 feet.

This year the futsal program is expecting about 50 participants but could handle more.

Teams will consist of seven players per team and will field four players at a time. Games will consist of two 20-minute halves and a five-minute halftime.

The registration fee is $50 and includes coaching, match play, a final tournament and a game jersey.

Tryouts will be the first week of November, and the season will run from Nov. 8 through Dec. 17.

Registration is now open at frankfortparksandrec.com and runs through Oct. 31.
