Argentina picked up a place in the FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016 last 16 with a 7-3 victory over Solomon Islands that, while comfortable on paper, was at times a test of the South Americans’ grit.
After struggling to find their rhythm against Kazakhstan, Argentina looked an improved outfit, with Alan Brandi tapping in to make that early superiority count, but Jeffrey Bule’s deflected effort saw that lead quickly wiped out. But Solomon Islands were not overawed by their opponents in any shape, being adventurous on the counter and often slick in the pass.
Santiago Basile’s class showed however as he picked out the top corner with a fierce drive, before Cristian Borruto did likewise from a tight angle. Solomon Islands struck back again though, through Coleman Makau this time, and their energy was tough to handle.
Argentina’s superior ability began to tell though as the game wore on, even if Elliot Ragomo’s fizzing free-kick lifted Solomon Islands – and the crowd – after the break. The shot counter was racking up the efforts though and Borruto picked up his hat-trick when well placed to touch in Leandro Cuzzolino’s volley.
Solomon Islands only hope of a knockout-stage place will be if they can beat Kazakhstan, while Argentina have the luxury of knowing their spot is secured when they take on Costa Rica.
