Quickfire Russians brush past Egypt

14 Sep 2016

A thunderous start saw Russia cruise to a 6-1 win over Egypt and maintain their 100 per cent record at the FIFA futsal World Cup Colombia 2016.

Russia could hardly have leapt out of the traps quicker. Just 12 seconds were on the clock when Danil Davydov slammed home after a neat Eder Lima lay-off. The pair switched roles to make two less than a minute later.

Egypt were unsurprisingly rattled. Their touch was loose and pass wayward as the powerful and incisive Russians harried them intensely, buoyed by the comfort of an early lead. Romelu put them further ahead but the North Africans settled and stemmed the flow of goals.

No joy materialised at the other end, however, as Georgy Zamtaradze was rarely pushed beyond the routine. Artem Niiazov and Eder added to coach Hesham Saleh’s woes as the deficit reached five after the break, but his side emerged with renew vigour to reclaim some pride.

Sadly for them enthusiasm and spirit alone could not fully extinguish the blazing Russians, though a well-worked free-kick allowed Mizo to earn some consolation and keep the gap at five.

Egypt now face a crucial clash against Thailand as they look to claim one of the automatic spots that now hang in the balance for them in Medellin. Meanwhile, Russia will aim to cap off an impressive start with a victory over Cuba in Cali.
