Your Houston News - The Courier of Montgomery CountyCity to award final bid in $1.7M MLK Park renovationsWednesday, September 7, 2016by
Catherine DominguezThe city of Conroe is continuing its $1.7 million renovation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park with the addition of several new amenities.
The council will meet at 6 tonight in the Council Chambers at 300 W. Davis St. to consider an $832,000 bid for new futsal courts and a sand volleyball court. Futsal is a modified type of soccer played with five players on a basketball court.
The action is part of the 2015-16 capital improvement plan to renovate the park, located on First Street near Avenue M, including a playground shade cover, splash pad, irrigation system upgrades and landscaping.
The council awarded a $600,000 contract for the splash pad in February. It will include about 4,800 square feet and pump 332 gallons per minute when in full operation.
According to Parks and Recreation Director Mike Riggens, the project originally came in over budget and the city decided to rebid the addition of the of the futsal and sand volleyball courts with some modifications.
“We would like to move forward in getting this project going,” Riggens said.
According to the city, the park previously was the site of the Conroe Landfill but was developed into a 25-acre park. Development of the park started with Phase I in 2000 and Phase II in 2005. The park features restroom facilities, a pavilion, a hard surface-walking trail and an ADA-compliant playground.
