Tranmere RoversFutsal Team Preparations Going WellNew team getting ready for their first seasonTue 16 Aug 2016The brand new Tranmere Rovers Futsal team have just over three weeks to wait until they get their FA National Futsal League season underway on Sunday 11 September with a home match against FS Derby.
Players were invited to attend open trials at the beginning of July, and from those sessions, a base of the new team has begun to take shape.
A number of players have been shortlisted and a decision on the final squad will be taken before the campaign gets underway.
Futsal Manager Damon Shaw was pleased with the standard on show in the trails and cannot wait to get underway.
He said: “The trials went really well and we've currently got a group of 30 players from which I have to select the final squad.
“All of those players have been given a training programme to follow, and on 4th September, I will make a final decision on the squad for the season.
“I'm looking for players who are committed and will give everything to the team from day one.”
Shaw is excited about this new start. He is moving to Tranmere following a spell in Spain and is excited about the new challenge that lies ahead.
“I'm really looking forward to showing the Tranmere fans what Futsal is all about and I am sure they'll be down in their numbers to support the Futsal team. Together, I hope we can bring success to the Club.
“We start against FS Derby, a team that just missed out on promotion last season, so it will be a tough start. But if the players have followed the training programme they have been given, we'll at least be ready physically.
“As with any new team, it will take time to get to where we want to be, but we will be ready and if we can start strongly then hopefully it will give us something to build on.
“I can't wait for the first match and I am looking forward to locking horns with Frank Chiarella [FS Derby manager] for the first time.
“Also an old friend and rival will be in our league as the manager of the new York City team. Junior Roberti is probably the manager I've played against the most.
“The FA National Futsal League is strong and I am excited to return to England after three years away as Futsal is being taken more and more seriously.
“The next few years are vital. I want Tranmere Rovers to be a big player in that and I am sure we've got everything to be a top team in a few seasons.”
