USA Travels To Costa Rica For Four-Nation Tournament

Continuing its preparation for the CONCACAF Futsal Championship next year, the United States traveled to Costa Rica this week for a four-team tournament called “Futsal International Challenge” at Hatillo’s Gimnasio BN Arena.

The round-robin event will run from 6-8 November and feature the futsal teams of Panama, Venezuela along with the hosts.

Under head coach Keith Tozer, the roster that traveled to Costa Rica is a blend of young players along with midfielder – Kraig Chiles, forward – Bato Radoncic and defender – Nelson Santana, whom all competed with U.S. at the last CONCACAF tournament in Guatemala in 2012.

After couple of days of training in Costa Rica, the USA will open the four-team competition on Friday (Nov. 6th) against a team they will face for the first time, Venezuela, at 18:00.

The next day (Saturday – Nov. 7th), the U.S. will take on Panama at 18:00 as this will be the first time since the 2012 CONCACAF Tournament that the two sides meet. The last encounter saw Panama eliminate the USA from group stage of the CONCACAF event with a 5-2 loss.

The USA concludes the “Futsal International Challenge” on Sunday (Nov. 8), when it squares off against the defending CONCACAF Champion, Costa Rica, at 19:00. The U.S. has won four of the five encounters against Costa Rica since 1996.
