Steven TorresCosta Rica To Host Four-Nation Tournament Next Month In preparations for the FIFA Futsal Qualifiers next year, the defending CONCACAF champion Costa Rica will host a four-team tournament called “Futsal International Challenge” from 6-8 November at Hatillo’s Gimnasio BN Arena.
The round-robin event, which will be organized by the Costa Rican LIFUTSAL (Liga Nacional de Fútbol Sala) and the United States’ agency of SportSeven, will feature the futsal national teams of Panama, USA, Venezuela and the hosts.
LIFUTSAL President, Rafael Vargas commented over the event: “To assist in the organization of this tournament is very important for the development of futsal in the region. It has been a while since Costa Rica has faced three national teams in this type of tournament.”
The last time Costa Rica staged a futsal tournament (not including friendlies) was during the 2013 Central American Games in San José.
“The objective of the event is to give promotion and international matches to the futsal teams leading up to the World Cup in Colombia next year,” said Luis Muchacho, President of SportSeven. “We have seen Costa Rica as a country that futsal has grown and has great development in the game.”
Costa Rica captured its second CONCACAF Futsal Championship in 2012 when it defeated the hosts Guatemala, 3-2, in the final to a crowd of 6,131 at the Domo Polideportivo.
