ERCOLESSI, AGLA-BOY with the Tricolour The AGLA-MAN MARCO ERCOLESSI collects league titles. He has won three in the last three seasons. His inaugural Italian championship was with Marca Trevigiana in 2013, then with partner LUPARENSE in 2014 and now with Pescara. The famous tricolour shield given to the champions is now tattooed on his skin.
“It has been a really positive season.” Says Ercolessi. “We have won the regular season and we were able to play three finals; the Winter Cup, the Italian Cup and the Scudetto. The first we lost on penalties, the other we were a whisker away from extra-time but for a goal conceded at the end, the championship could not and would not escape us. It is a well deserved and a culmination of everything we’ve put in during the year. There is perhaps a regret having brought home only one title, but once the playoffs arrived we were able to give something extra due to what had occurred before.”
In the playoffs Pescara lost just one game of the nine they played. “The quarter final with Latina was the most difficult. We managed to lose Game 1 and we feared the title would escape us. Then we released everything and demonstrated our quality. We had a good game in the first semi final against Acqua & Sapone and, though in the second game we were hampered by suspensions, were able to show our strength. We reached the final as strong favourites but we were aware this wasn’t the reality.”
“Kaos had eliminated two strong sides in Asti and Luparense and this proved they were a worthy opponent in the final. In Game 1 they made it very difficult for us and only relented at the end. In Game 2 we played better than them. In my opinion this was the turning point of the series. It was a blow for them.”
“In Game 3 we came with courage and gave then very little. The two teams were tired and perhaps this affected the spectacle. They succeeded and won fairly because I missed the 10m penalty and chance to win the game because we couldn’t overcome them in the lottery of penalties. Game 4 was full of suffering. It was a tight affair. The course of the game was changed with Kaka’s sending off. We equalised with the extra man and pushed hard. It went to penalties and this time it would be our turn to win.”
