Boro beat Sheffield in Super League openerMIDDLESBROUGH, 9th March - Middlesbrough Futsal Club got off to a flying start in the Super League with a 5-3 win over Sheffield on Sunday at Thornaby Pavilion.
Sheffield took the lead, but an inspired performance by Mikey Roberts secured the three points for the Teessiders. His hattrick, with goals from Josh Clark and Adam Byron meant Boro are joint with Baku United and Genesis on 3 points after one match.
The top two teams in the Super League groups will contest the semi finals. Boro next travel to Reading before hosting Birmingham on Easter Sunday.
Mikey Roberts, captain in the absence of Bettson was impressed with the youngsters who stepped up in the absence of several senior players.
"We played really well and the younger boys listened and made the absences less of a problem. They weren't phased by playing in the Super League and they deserve the plaudits," said Roberts.
Meanwhile those youngsters, Josh Clark, Mikey McGee, Adam Byron, Dylan McAvoy and Jonny Lazenby were all with the England under-19s regional centre of excellence on Saturday, before they joined up with the Boro senior team to take on Sheffield.
They played two matches against the UK Futsal Academy and won 3-2 and 4-0.
Middlesbrough are launching a full time under-19s team for boys and girls in September, with education in a BTEC Sport alongside futsal training. For more information, please visit BoroFutsal.com.
