Match Day 3: August 9, 2014
Daily Bulletins• Match Day 3 has been TENSE. With nearly all brackets up for grabs at the beginning of the day, teams would not yield easily. Today’s action has featured a feistiness that is typical of the day before the Championship matches. Just about all teams have been in it, but by the end of the day, the final cuts from the Championships were all made.
• In the Benjamin Division, the youngest of the players could sense that they were setting the competitive tone for the day. In the end, the brackets have revealed a Final tomorrow morning between Gulf Coast Australia and Sports CIA of Sao Paolo. What an incredibly cosmopolitan tournament to feature so many great teams that the Finalists actually live 8,670 miles apart!
• In the Alevin Female Division, Rough Riders have had arguably the easiest walk in the park called “The World Futsal Championships” having won all five of their matches with a 60-1 goal differential. They will play in the final against FC Futura PP of Missouri, which was, in fact, the only team to score on them in the tournament so far, in a relatively competitive 1-5 loss to the Rough Riders.
• The Alevin Males Championship features an excellent rematch of Thursday’s match between Legends of San Jose, CA and City Futsal of Dallas. City Futsal will be staying up late tonight to create the tactics that will reverse the earlier result that went 6-3 Legend’s way.
• In the Infantil Division, Legends of San Jose, CA (again!) and Queen Stars of New York (a mere 2,600 miles apart) emerged victorious in their groups with walkover wins over IME Futsal and JSFL 5 respectively.
• The Cadete Females Final is between the local home favorites of Merritt Island, FL and the Futbolistas, a team that cannot be located so easily on the map as they feature all-star young ladies from all over the USA. Their coach, Nacho Garrido, the wise Murcian Coach who excelled at El Pozo in LNFS has brought Las Futbolistas together in short order and have brought them to the final with a perfect record and a 35-3 goal differential.
• The Cadete Males Final will pit the pre-tournament odds-on favorite, FC Barcelona Futsal versus the less-heralded, but also undefeated Pachuca USA of Maryland. FCB rolled predictably with a 17-4 margin over Queen Stars of New York, whereas Pachuca USA battled a very tough City Futsal to a 2-1 result to make the final. The whole Futsal world will be waiting to see what the 11:00am result will be tomorrow.
• Juvenils will be represented by Sports CIA of Sao Paolo who have torn up this Division with a 61-5 goal differential versus BNC Revolution from Maryland, whose only loss this week was 0-4 to Sport CIA on Thursday morning at 8:00am. BNC will no doubt get an early wake-up call to be ready to vanquish their Brazilian rivals.
• The Adult Division delivered everything you would have hoped for from the Heavyweight Division. By the end of the two semifinals, very few players were still standing. To call PV Muita Calma’s 4-2 semifinal win over Brazil Futsal “physical” would be to call the Battle of Iwo Jima “physical.” In the other bracket, FC Dolores of Uruguay held on strong against a tough Toronto Boca Juniors squad that was left with several players sore from the week’s tests.
• To remain with the original theme, the two Adult Finalists’ home fans will be cheering from 7,300 miles apart. So, grab your compass, GPS, fill the tank with gas and get on over to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports at the Walt Disney World Resort on Sunday morning for the remainder of the World Futsal Championship Finals.
