Futsal Focus Facebook PageItaly National Futsal Captain Gabriel Lima talks to Futsal Focus at the UEFA Futsal EURO 2014 Final
Russia were favourites to win the final after defeating defending champions Spain in the semi-final, commentators and fans predicted Eder Lima to shine and lift the trophy for Russia after consistent spectacular performances throughout the tournament. However, Italy had only lost once in their opening game to Slovenia 3-2 but showed their intent by destroying Azerbaijan 7-0 who had defeated Slovenia in a fantastic encounter in their previous match 7-6. Italy progressed through the tournament stages defeating Croatia in the Quarter Finals 2-1 and in another spectacle to watch Italy confirmed their place in the Final defeating Portugal who were lead by futsal genius Ricardinho and back from injury Cardinal who had an inspiring tournament.
Italy took to the court against Russia with Stefano Mammarella (goalkeeper, Marina CSA) selected twice as the best goalkeeper in the world, Saad Assis (forward, FC Barcelona) fantastic futsal player with a glittering career, team captain Gabriel Lima and a group of talented players who had proved throughout the competition that they were here to compete and win and win they did. A fantastic final as predicted was the result as Italy ran the clock down 3-1 winners when the whistle was blown.
After lifting the trophy Italian Captain Gabriel Lima spoke with Futsal Focus writer Jack William Cantwell;
1. Did you think from the start of the tournament you could win it? After losing the first match it must have seemed more difficult?Since I watched the draw of the tournament I thought it was possible to reach the final this time. But imaging it is not the same thing as achieving it! After the first match when we lost it was difficult to find the way to victory but like a real group of friends, we did it!
2. During the match, what was your game plan to contain Russia, especially Eder Lima?Russia is a very strong team and their coach is very intelligent. They have two formations which they perform well. One of them with a left leg pivot and another one with a right leg pivot. To win that match we knew was going to be a mental battle because we knew that Russia were likely thinking that they had already won the tournament because they had defeated Spain and we had to take advantage of that. We knew that we could win if we played perfectly without mistakes and frustrated them!
3. When the final whistle went, what were your thoughts?I thought it was not true! I remembered the final of U21 Euro in 2008 against Russia that we lost. I was happy to reach the final, a great achievement in my career but winning it, I cannot describe in words.
4. How has futsal grown in Italy? Does it have a big following?Futsal in Italy is in crisis. In Serie A we have only 10 teams and Marca Futsal that won the last scudetto is playing with the U18 team. It's so sad to say this but I don't know how we can grow up with directors like we have in our sport. They aren't good person, it's difficult to work with no serious guys. I'm lucky to be in Asti Calcio a 5 because they are wonderful, they treat you like a real person and not like a number!
5. What tips and tricks would you give to an English Futsal player looking to improve?Passing, passing for me it's the most important thing in Futsal!
