Boys score futsal goal

WHAT started out as a kick around in between soccer seasons has turned into a gig on the Australian futsal team for two Port Stephens boys.

Glen Oak's Corey Holloway, 12, and Wallalong's Aled Siever, 11, both received word late last month that they had been selected for the Australian futsal side.

In November, Corey will head to Barcelona, Spain, to represent Australia in the under-13s competition.

Corey's mother, Nicole Holloway, said she knew her son was a good player but was "shocked" by the achievement.

"We [family] didn't expect him to make it," she said.

At the four-day national try-outs Corey was called up an age group from under-12s into the under-13s.

"He is 30 kilograms and tiny and played against boys six-foot-tall," Mrs Holloway said.

"He played really well."

When Corey goes to Barcelona, Aled will fly to Malaysia with his Australian under-12s side to play against regional and national Malaysian futsal teams.

Aled's father, Dwayne Siever, said he was "extremely proud" of his son.

He said when Aled heard the news he was "over the moon" and gracious.

Mr Siever said Aled told him he was proud to have played against such great players at the nationals.

In Malaysia, Aled will play five tournaments of three to four games each.

Both boys travelled to Penrith for the national competition in January with their Northern New South Wales futsal teams and were selected to play for Australia out of players from across the country and New Zealand.

Mr Siever said the boys had played soccer together since they were about six years old.

Mr Siever was delighted that they had maintained their friendship and mutual love of the game.
