Our 'all star' goal keeper

Jan. 30, 2014

ELEVEN year old Wingham youngster, Keegan Hughes, has returned from competing at the Australian Futsal Association National Titles held in Penrith, having been named as the "All Star" goal keeper for the 11 Years Boys tournament.

This is a huge achievement as "All Stars" are selected at the titles by coaches of the competing teams who nominate the most outstanding goalkeeper and four field players.

As a result of this, Keegan will head to Malaysia to represent his country in futsal.

Keegan only started playing futsal, a modified version of soccer played indoors, in 2012 at Saxbys Stadium Taree but took to it quickly, indicating that he really enjoys the fast pace of the game.

Despite not making the finals, Keegan and his team mates all played to the best of their ability and learnt a lot from participating at the Nationals.

The 11 year old keeper has also played soccer since he was five years old and is currently the goal keeper for the Football Mid North Coast South representative team. Interestingly though, he only started in the position of goal keeper in 2012.

Keegan will be part of an Australian team to tour Malaysia in November and December. He will play Malaysian representative teams and participate in special training sessions whilst on the tour.

"I was really excited when my mum and dad told me that I had been named as an 'All Star'. I am really looking forward to going to Malaysia to play futsal," he said.

Keegan needs $4600 to make it to Malaysia, so will be trying to save as much as he can. If you would like to help Keegan achieve his dream of playing for Australia in Malaysia, you can contact his parents, Sonia and Allan, via The Wingham Chronicle office.
