Baku United made history in Poland by progressing to the Main Round after topping their group in the UEFA Futsal Cup Preliminary Round. The London club beat Ali Demi from Albania 4-1 and the hosts Wisla Krakow 7-0 to qualify.
It is their first appearance in the competition after claiming their first league championship last season, ending Helvecia’s five year domination by defeating them in the Grand Finals. It is clear their ambitions surpassed national borders as they made several signings to strengthen their squad, which is led by Spanish coach Chema Jimenez.
When the draw for the Preliminary Round was made it couldn’t have provided a tougher task as they were selected to play in the group of Polish Champions Wisla, who were the strongest team they could face and would be hosting the mini-tournament. They went into the final game having to defeat the hosts to qualify. It was a tight game with Baku leading 1-0 at half-time. However in the 2nd half they managed to add another two goals and Wizla decided to employ the fly goalkeeper. This turned out to be a mistake as Baku took advantage and ended the game with a comprehensive 7-0 victory.
It is another outstanding achievement in 2013 for the club which is named after the capital of Azerbaijan and sponsored by
Odlar Yurdu Organisation, which promotes Azerbaijan and its culture. This year they have yet to be defeated in a competitive fixture, won the English Championship and now progressed to the Main Round of the UEFA Futsal Cup. Their next task will be in Cyprus where they will face hosts AC Omonia Nicosia, FK EP Chrudim from Czech Republic and FC Litija from Slovenia, and they will be hoping to rewrite history once more.
