Capital hosting Wales’ first ever UEFA Futsal five-a-side football competition .

A fast-paced indoor variation of football which originated in South America hit Cardiff last night.

The capital is hosting Wales’ first ever UEFA Futsal five-a-side football competition at the House of Sport II in Leckwith.

The sport was created in Uruguay and has been hugely popular in Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Spain for decades.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Neymar are among the football superstars who honed their skills playing the high-intensity sport.

Futsal is played with a smaller ball and on a smaller pitch to place demand on the players’ technique and skill.

It is now growing in popularity in the UK and is seen as a way of developing the skills of youngsters.

Wrexham Futsal Club took on Bosina’s KMF Tango Sarajevo in last night’s opening match, with two more matches tonight and tomorrow.

Football Association of Wales (FAW) futsal development officer Richard Gunney said: “Hosting the UEFA Futsal Cup preliminary round is a fantastic opportunity to further develop Futsal in Wales.”

All games kick off at 6.15pm and tickets start at £2 for children and £5 for adults.
