The Epworth BellsRovers get Fut’ on ladderSunday 28 July 2013Doncaster Rovers’ first season in Futsal UK’s national league has been hailed as a success by club officials.
Rovers found it tough going in the A-League, featuring the likes of Leeds United, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday.
But Doncaster’s ‘B’ team had more success, winning their first six games on their way to qualifying for the national finals.
Players were embarking on their first season of competitive futsal after enrolling on a two-year Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma with Doncaster Rovers Education Foundation.
Team coach Ian Dabell said: “I thought they had a good first season. Considering none of them had played futsal before I thought they adapted well.
“I’ve noticed some good progression in several players and have a good idea where we need to go with our training sessions for the new season.”
Rovers’ futsal coordinator Sam Parkin added: “It has been a very productive season with regards to the development of the players.
“All the lads have improved some element of their game which is great to see.
“I’d like to thank all the lads for their hard work. I’d also like to thank Ian and Ben (tutor) for all the hard work they have put in this year.”
Rovers’ B team finished fourth in their five-team group in the national finals, beating Bristol City but losing to Reading, Chesterfield and Brighton.
Lewis Richardson and Jordan Hill shared the top goalscorer accolade with 11 goals apiece.
Matty Tunnard was voted Players’ Player of the Season and Tom Hogg collected the Manager’s Player of the Season award.
