Alumnus Beat Kazma 3-1

By Iddris Seidu

KUWAIT CITY, July 17: Game day eight of the ongoing Kuwait Mini World Futsal Club Tournament saw Spanish Club Santiago Futsal consolidate their group D lead as they outpaced Thailand’s Chonburi FC 3-1 in the last of the second round group round robin matches played at the Kazma SC Hall in Adailiya Wednesday.

Hamza Amessaoud opened scoring for Santiago in the 6th minute to make it 1-0 for the Spanish side, a score line maintained by Santiago till the end of the first half, despite incessant pressure from the Thai side especially in the final seconds of the half. And just a minute into the second half, Alan Cuasnicu made good of a David Mulas pass, tapping the ball pass Chonburi keeper Esmaeil Abasian for Santiago’s second goal and as soon as the ball was passed from the center by Chonburi, Cuasnicu was again in the right position to bang in his second goal in less than a minute to stretch Santiago’s lead to 3-0 after 21 minutes of play.

Chonburi’s Nattavut Madyalan pulled one back in the 27th minute. Game ended 3-1 at the buzzer, Santiago ruling the pack after two consecutive wins in group D in as many rounds, garnering six points. With one more round of play left to complete the group round robin permutations, Santiago’s next and final match in the group stages pits them against MNK Alumnus of Croatia come Sunday while Chonburi take on Kazma in the next match on the same day.

Meanwhile, Croatia’s MNK Alumnus triumphed over Kazma club of Kuwait in the second match, finishing 3-1 against the Kuwaiti side. Both sides played to a 0-0 drawn game in the first half, but four minutes into the second half, Penava struck in a goal to break the deadlock, 1-0 for Alumnus. He scored the second goal seven minutes later to raise the tally to 2-0. Daniel Giasson pulled one back for Kazma in the 35th minute.

Despite the exceptional skills exhibited by Kazma’s all-Brazilian lineup, the Europeans’ strategy was to score goals which they implemented to perfection as Kristijan Postruzin, taking advantage of the last minute power play Kazma had resorted to, sent a long drive from far post into the unguarded Kazma goalpost to put the gloss on Alumnus’ win in the 39th minute to make it 3-1 at the close.
After the next and final round of the round robin matches, winners and runner ups of the four groups will play each other in the semi finals, followed by the final championship to conclude the 17-day tournament.
