Andrew FranczakWOODSIDE Youth under-10 boys are national futsal champions after emerging victorious in the National Youth Futsal Festival.
The Goffs Oak team were one of three Hertfordshire representatives – Hitchin Belles and AC Finchley – at the festival, which was held at the National Futsal Centre in Birmingham.
Coach Franco Di Rubbo said: “It was an amazing day. I was just hoping that we would be able to play at that level and the boys would keep their positive feelings towards Futsal.
“However, as usual the boys had set their own bar slightly higher.”
After winning three of their four group matches, Woodside saw off Escolla under-10s in the semi-finals, winning on penalties after a the game finished in a 0-0 stalemate.
In the final they faced Sproatley Juniors, who has beaten Woodside 3-2 in the group stage.
But on this occasion Woodside prevailed, taking the trophy thanks to a 3-1 win.
“We have been playing Futsal with the boys as part of our indoor winter training for the last two years,” said Di Rubbo.
“Their technical ability on the ball, the speed of their decision making and awareness of what is happening around them has improved massively.
“I don’t think it is a coincidence that the three big Futsal nations – Brazil, Spain and Italy – are the same countries dominating the 11-a-side version of the game.”
