Bendigo AdvertiserCastlemaine star picked for Futsal World CupJuly 11, 2013FROM Castlemaine to Colombia, Sarah Richardson’s soccer journey is set for an exciting new turn at the Women’s Futsal World Cup later this year.
Castlemaine’s Richardson is the only Victorian selected in Australia’s 12-player team for the World Cup in November.
It’s another feather in the cap of the former Bendigo Amateur Soccer League women’s and junior division star.
Richardson was among 30 players invited to intense trials for the Australian team following her standout performances for Victoria at January’s national titles.
Now Richardson, who plays outdoor soccer with Bundoora United, as well as futsal for Pascoe Vale, will wear the green and gold at the sport’s elite level.
“I train twice a week with my club Pascoe Vale Futsal Club, which includes both the men and women training together,” she said.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me as the men’s team has some of the best futsal players in Australia, who come from all types of backgrounds and cultures.”
Richardson also plays futsal in the new women’s W-League at Futsal Oz in Brunswick each week.
“We have a few Melbourne Victory Women’s players playing in the league, as well as a lot of Victorian representatives of futsal,” Richardson said.
“This competition has only just been established and has generated a lot of interest.”
Richardson’s family has a strong connection with the Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club.
Her father, Peter, won three BASL division one best-and-fairests and is now coaching the women’s team, while her brothers played juniors and seniors at the club.
Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club president Emeile Dawkins recently handed Richardson a $500 cheque to help her on the way to the World Cup.
Richardson hopes to fundraise to help her get to Colombia for the November 7 to 16 event.
