Exeter CityFutsal scholars impress in finals8th July 2013Grecian representatives do the club proud on national stageThe second-year BTEC students on Exeter City’s Futsal and Education scholarship programme made the semi-finals of the Football League Trust National Futsal Finals in Birmingham on Saturday 6th July.
The team met Stevenage, West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United in the group stage, from where they progressed to play Hull City in the quarter-finals. Despite Hull taking a 2-0 lead, the match finished 4-4 and Exeter City went through to the semis after a tense penalty shootout.
Here they met Leeds, who had beaten them in the group stage, and although the match was close-fought, City lost 3-2. Leeds were the eventual winners of the tournament, beating Reading 3-2 in the final.
“The attitude and performance of the whole squad was excellent,” said Danny Harris, sport development officer for Exeter City’s Football in the Community department. “To finish as one of the top four teams in the country is a fantastic achievement.”
