New Straits TimesM.A.C. FC come out tops in exciting final28 June 2013THE sport of futsal enjoyed a bull run in Kuala Terengganu recently with many spectators turning out for the Red Bull Futsal Tri-Nations Cup.
While fans were treated to a range of family entertainment programmes outside the state stadium over two days, the final between M.A.C. FC and Gelombang FC had all the ingredients of an exciting start and explosive finish.
Shah Alam-based M.A.C. FC edged home favourites Gelombang FC 5-4 to emerge winners of the second edition of the series and pocketed the RM20,000 winner's purse.
It was also a double celebration for the boys from Shah Alam as Mohammad Azwann Ismail was awarded the Golden Boot award while skipper Ahmad Faizal was named Most Valuable Player.
In the third placing playoff, Indera SC Futsal defeated Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council 6-3. Indera SC won RM5,000 while Royal Brunei took home RM2,000.
The final was watched by Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Said, State Exco for Youth and Sports, Rozi Mamat and an estimated 5,000 fans.
Red Bull Malaysia executive director, Jyn Wee was deeply impressed by the fans turnout and strong support from the state government.
He pledged that the third edition of the Tri-Nations series in 2015 will be held in Malaysia, instead of the rotation process among the three nations. Brunei hosted the inaugural event in 2011.
"The support here has been really overwhelming, especially from the hundreds of fans who came to cheer their home team Gelombang FC.
"The second Red Bull Futsal Tri-Nations Cup has been a successful event," said Wee, adding that the next edition will be held in Malaysia as well, though the venue will be confirmed later.
"The final between Gelombang FC and M.A.C. FC turned out be truly exciting and had every one on their feet. This is the kind of atmosphere that makes the event challenging."
Ahmad Said handed over the Red Bull Futsal Tri-Nations Cup flag to FA of Malaysia's deputy chairman for futsal and beach football, Datuk Hamdan Mohammed Khalib at the end of the prize presentation ceremony, and also RM10,000 to Rozi for the development of sports in the state.
