ABS-CBNnews.comFootball, futsal scrapped from PH's SEA Games list27/06/2013Fans protest non-inclusionMANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) have excluded the football and futsal teams from its list of contingents for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar this December.
According to ASEAN Football, the POC and PSC decided to stick to its criteria of including only gold medalists from the previous SEA Games. Also included are athletes and teams who have potential to win gold medals.
“They’re gone,” said Philippine chef de mission Jeff Tamayo, referring to both teams of football and Futsal which wanted to send their men and women’s team to Myanmar.
Tamayo said POC president Jose Cojuangco Jr. and PSC chairman Richie Garcia wanted to send a small delegation to the biennial event.
From the initial list of 200 athletes, the POC and the PSC have cut it down to 130.
“Cojuangco and Richie are really pushing for a small delegation. We’re now in the process of scrutinizing the list and include only those who are really worthy of going to Myanmar,” said Tamayo.
The news did not go well with local football fans who complained through Twitter.
“4 teams. Football & Futsal - Men's & Women's. Each team already preparing & spending time, money & effort to represent us. Let them compete,” Jaron Genota said through his Twitter account.

Lean Santos27/06/2013MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine football suffered a major blow on Thursday, June 27, after the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) ruled out the country's participation in the football and futsal events in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
The decision was based on POC president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr. and PSC chairman Richie Garcia's strict regulation to only allow athletes who earned medals in previous editions of the SEA Games to participate.
From around 200 athletes, the proposed delegation has been cut down to 130 in the hope of giving the country a podium finish.
Included in the athletes left out were players from under-23 men's national football team and the Philippine women's national football team, known as the Malditas. Futsal national teams -- both men and women -- were also dropped.
In the official Twitter account of the Philippine football team, @PHI_Azkals, participation will only be open for potential gold medal performers.
