Oaklands College staff teach students lesson in futsal league

Thursday 27th June 2013

Staff taught students a lesson in the final of the Futsal League at Oaklands College in St Albans recently.

The college league drew to a close this week with play-offs to decide the winners.

The Staffalona team, made up of people who work at the college, defeated the students, playing under the banner of Crumpets 5 Muskateers, 2-1 on penalties after a tense 6-6 draw.

The league has been run by the Hertfordshire FA in partnership with Oakland’s College and St Albans City Youth FC.

Staffalona had gone through the league unbeaten, while Crumpets 5 Musketeers reached the final thanks to a win in their last league game that secured a second place finish.

Crumpets had taken the lead in the final before Staffalona scored a controversial equaliser.

Three more goals from each side meant it was all-square at half-time, and after the break Staffalona twice went in front but were pegged back on each occasion.

Neither team could break the deadlock, so the match went to a shoot-out, with Staffalona holding their nerve to claim the title.

An earlier match had seen Norfolk ‘N’ Chance defeat ESOL 5-3, a team made up of players who attended Futsal training sessions at the college.

These sessions, taken by St Albans City Youth coaches, were a prelude to the league where players learned the game and met new people.

Futsal is the 5v5 football format that encourages player development with the use of different equipment and rules.
