Dusan Matic Interview

Text by Marijan Palic

Translation by Doug Reed

Who is Dusan Matic? Tell us about your playing career?
I played as a goalkeeper in football and in 2000 I started playing futsal. At first I played tournaments and later, in 2005, in an amateur league. With some friends we founded KMF Novi Beograd and from that moment I started to take futsal seriously. At first I was the goalkeeper and club secretary and later the goalkeeper coach. My entire playing career was spent in KMF "New Belgrade", a club of which I am one of the founders. I played in the 1st and 2nd Serbian futsal leagues.

How did you become the goalkeeper coach of Finland's futsal national team?
I was appointed to this position on the recommendation of Mico Martic. Before this we had worked together as instructors on a class for futsal coaches so this later collaboration came as a consequence of that.

How is Finland?
Finnish people are very studious and thorough in everything they do and it is the same in futsal. The relationship with all the team members is of the highest level and it is a pleasure to work with people who enjoy futsal and have a plan for its development.

What do you think is most important quality to be a good goalkeeper in futsal?
This is a question I am asked very often. Many believe that physical preparation and courage are important for a good futsal goalkeeper but my opinion is that it is the mentality and concentration that makes the difference between a good, a great and the best goalkeeper.

Who is the best goalkeeper in world futsal?
With regard to selecting who is the best futsal goalkeeper in the world, I believe it is something individual to each person. Using my criteria Luis Amado was unmatched until a few years ago. However now I definitely believe that it is Italy national team goalkeeper Stefano Mammarella and he was the best goalkeeper at the World Cup in Thailand. At this point I would like to highlight that it was a great honour and pleasure for me that this great person gave a very favourable review of my book, “Futsal Goalkeeper”, which is published in English.

You are going to do a training demonstration in Osijek. What can we expect?
Firstly I would like to thank you for kindly inviting me to this town to hold two demonstration training sessions and spend some time with goalkeepers from this region. The exercises and sessions will focus on developing the mentality and concentration of the goalkeepers. Nevertheless it should be kept in mind that they are all different and individuals and so the approach to training them should be like this also.

Lastly, tell us something about goalkeepers.
You know the saying; "Goalkeepers are a strange variety"

Dusan Matic’s book about futsal goalkeeping will be presented after the training demonstrations and is available to purchase.
