Fort McMurray TodayFury win futsal goldby
Trevor HowlettSunday, April 7, 2013The Fort McMurray Fury U14 boys futsal team is bringing home the gold after going undefeated at the Tier II provincial championships in Edmonton.
The U14 boys fury went 3-0 with wins over St. Albert, KC Trojans and the Northern Strikers. In the gold medal game, the Fury edged the Strikers 7-6 to win the championship in a shootout.
“We got a lead off the start 2-0, but they just kind of scored two quick goals on us,” said Fury midfielder Alex Pike.
“We got another one and we thought for sure we’d have it, but they got one more goal and it ended up going to a shootout and we managed to win that. I wasn’t sure how we’d do because we only had about three weeks to practice but we ended up doing really good.”
The U14 boys fury won their first game against St. Albert 15-2 with four goals from Joshua Gray, three goals from Austin Couture, three goals from Joey Moores, three goals from Alex Pike and a single goal for each of Jacob Goebel and Brendan McLean. In the Fury’s second game against the KC Trojans, Gray added four more goals, Goebel and Pike added a pair and Couture and Moores had singles.
Including the shootout, goal scorers for the Fury in the gold medal game were Couture (2), Pike (2), Gray, McLean and Moores.
The Fury went into the tournament with eight players but claimed the championship with only seven. The Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association sent four teams in total and while the U14 Fury were the only team to win the championship, it was a good showing overall.
The U14 girls won silver and were also given the fairplay award, while the U12 boys won bronze and the fairplay award.
The U12 girl’s fury team were the only ones not to medal and finished with a 0-3 record.
