Trials to select Sukma Futsal Team

KUCHING: Response to statewide futsal trials have been encouraging. So far 45 potential state players, 38 men and 7 women, have been shortlisted.

State futsal chief coach Mohammad Mantali said that the trials were held to spot talented players to represent the state in the coming 15th Malaysia Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur from June 28 to July 7.

Thus far trials have been conducted in Kuching, Kanowit, Sibu, Mukah, Dalat and Lawas. The men’s team have also retained four players who played in the 2011 Sukma (Malaysia Games) when Sarawak managed to win the bronze medal.

Mantali also revealed that there will be five upcoming trials in January 2013 to take place in Kapit (11-12 Jan), Sarikei (13-14 Jan), Bintulu (19-20 Jan), Sri Aman (25-26 Jan) and Betong (27-28 Jan).

Friendly matches with teams outside Sarawak may also be in the pipeline with the aim to give exposure to the players.

Futsal continues to grow in popularity. Last year the state sports agencies had announced that they would continue to build more futsal courts in Sarawak.
