Beacon NewsBC Futsal Championships: Metro-Select boys on top after day oneU16 Burnaby Selects go 2-0 at provincial BC Futsal Championshipsby
Lev JacksonThe first day of the provincial BC Futsal championships did not go as expected for the Metro-Select boys teams challenging the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League teams.
The U14 NVSC Selects were the only Metro-Select team participating in the division 1 bracket and ended the first day of round robin competition with a 1-0-1 record.
Coastal FC, Magnuson Ford Mariners FC and Fusion FC are the three BC Premier League teams participating in the tournament.
The NVSC Selects started the day with a 9-5 win against Coastal FC and finished with a 2-2 tie against Magnuson Ford Mariners FC.
The EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League normally takes the top 10-per-cent of players in the province. That said, Metro-Select teams playing in division 1 are matched very tough.
Coach Edward Wright, who’s Fusion FC team faces NVSC Selects in the last round robin game, has been very happy with how the tournament has been run so far.
“The tournament is a spectacular opportunity for the boys to learn how to play the game quickly, using a lot of skill,” said Wright.
Though his team fell short their first game, Wright was very happy with how his team performed.
“They were terrific,” he said. “They played at a very high level, they played for one another.”
In the U16 division, the Burnaby Selects won both their opening games and have punched their ticket to the championship game.
They beat the U16 Fusion FC 4-2 in their first game and finished the day with a 5-3 victory over Coastal FC.
