Philippine Futsal League slated in Butuan

Wednesday 12th of December 2012

BUTUAN CITY, Dec. 12 (PIA) -- The Philippine Futsal League (Mindanao Leg) is scheduled for kick-off on December 15-16, 2012 at the Father Saturnino Urios University (FSUU) Gym which will be hosted by the Butuan-Agusan Norte Football Assocation (BANFA) and initiated by the Philippine Futsal Committee in coordination with the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

The Futsal League is an open tournament for Men’s Futsal Team which will be participated by all the 17 football associations in Mindanao. “Futsal is a 5-a-side version of football played in smaller fields, or indoor gyms and courts with a smaller ball. The Philippine Futsal Community is a group dedicated to promoting Futsal in the Philippines. With the recent rise of the popularity of football and the longtime clamor for a better football program locally, futsal has great potential for becoming a foundation for world class football in the Philippines since it’s more easily accessible to people,” according to the Futsal Committee.

For his part, BANFA President and Vice Mayor Law Fortun has expressed elation over the choice of Butuan City as host to this year’s Mindanao Leg of the tournament as this is a clear manifestation that the country’s football community has recognized BANFA’s solid contribution in promoting the game of football. According to Fortun this will also be a big opportunity to promote Butuan City to visitors since close to 200 football players will be coming over to compete in the said tournament. This is yet another feather in the cap of Fortun who was able to ignite passion for the sport and rebuild a strong football community in Butuan City which was in muddled in the past years.
