Talent on show at futsal titles

THE Australian Futsal Association state titles at the Clarence Sports Centre at the weekend showcased some of the best young talent from around Tasmania.

Sunday's finals included the under-13 decider, the under-14 final and the youth final in a hotly contested afternoon of futsal.

Beachside had to muster up a five-goal second half to overcome a spirited Hyenas outfit in the under-13 final.

After going in at half-time trailing 4-5, Beachside netted five second-half goals to two, to win the match 9-7.

In the under-14 final Bboss was far too good for State Boys, with five unanswered goals in the first nine minutes setting the tone of the game in a high-scoring 13-5 victory.

The youth final, contested between Mullet Mafia and Young Stars, was balanced for much of the first half, until the Stars managed to net four unanswered goals in the latter stages to lead 7-3 at the break.

The Mafia took the game to its rivals with two quick goals in the second period, before the Young Stars drilled home the title with four more goals to secure the result 11-5.

Before the youth final, consisting of 15 to 17-year-olds, Mafia had to overcome V-Team 10-4 in their semi-final, with the Young Stars beating Devonport Youth in a tight 3-2 win.

Australian Futsal Association venue manager Stratos Plomaritis said the competition was a success.

"You see the smiles on the kids' faces when they come off and they've won a game and they've given their best, and that's all you ask for," Plomaritis said.

"There is a lot of talent out there and I can't ask for any more than that."

He said the competition would continue next year, with the chance to take some of the teams to nationals in mid-January.
