This is South Devon/Herald ExpressWinning team was only formed at last minuteThursday, December 06, 2012A DECISION by their PE teacher to enter them into a futsal competition proved to be the first step for the winners of the Junior Team of the Year Award.
Torquay Community College U14 futsal goalkeeper Adam Taylor and defender Robbie York picked up the trophy on behalf of their team and admitted that the team had only been pulled together on the suggestion of teacher Gareth Harries.
The boys went on to win South Devon Schools' finals held at Paignton CSC, before going on to become South West champions in the regional finals.
At the national finals in Birmingham, the team recorded wins against teams from Liverpool, Norfolk and London to reach the semi-finals – and were minutes away from reaching the overall final before conceding two late goals.
Taylor said: "We're all thankful to Mr Harries because he was the one who put us together. He just entered us into the competition and we took it on from there."
But York said that once the team had been formed, they worked hard for their national top-four finish.
He said: "We had to work really hard with extra training sessions and even got to miss some lessons to put in extra work. We got to the national level and were so excited about it.
"Mr Harries even doubted us and said it had been a good run but not to expect too much, but we just kept winning until we were in the semi-finals."
Also shortlisted was South Devon College Basketball Academy and SDC Rugby Academy.
