Sportsbyte SunderlandSunderland Women’s Futsal team taste defeat in first game19 Nov. 2012The University of Sunderland’s Women’s Futsal team were beaten 10-2 in their first BUCS league game, away to the University of Manchester 1sts.
After already having to forfeit a game previously to Leeds Met University, due to not being able to assemble a team, Saturday’s result added to a disappointing start to the season.
Sunderland were looking to capitalise on their opponents own rocky start, as MMU crashed to consecutive defeats in their opening two fixtures.
However, having to leave at 6am for a 9:30am kick off left the team tired against defensively well-rehearsed opposition.
In addition to tiredness, the squad were unable to make use of run on/off subs, a vital way of keeping the team fresh, due to both Orlaith McVeagh and India Thomas suffering injuries.
Despite the difficulties faced the half-time score was only 2-1 to the home side.
Danielle Farrell was encouraged by the performance of the team, she said: “We can take some positives from the performance.
“It was out first Futsal game, and had freshers’ who had never played Futsal before, yet we still scored two goals and played quick impressive pieces.
“The girls all enjoyed the game, which is what it’s all about at the end of the day.”
The Futsal team will next play in a tournament at Northumbria’s Sport Central on December 12th.
