Sportsbyte SunderlandSunderland Womens Futsal team looking for first winThe University of Sunderland’s Womens Futsal team will be looking for their first three points of the season when they travel to the University of Manchester 1sts.
The season didn’t start too brightly for the team from the North-East, with their game against Leeds Met University called off and the points awarded to the home side due to Sunderland not being able to fulfil a team.
With the Wearside team only winning one of their eight games last year, captain Laura Hockaday realises that the postponement isn’t ideal, but is hoping the side can learn from the experience of their first season as a team last year.
Sunderland currently lie bottom of the table, due to being deducted three points for their postponed game.
But this is Manchester’s first season in futsal and Hockaday is confident her team can take advantage and get them the win they need to put the team back into positive points.
Hockaday said: “It was disappointing not being able to get a team together for the Leeds game, especially as it was the first game of the season. Starting the season in negative points is not how we wanted to start.”
However, despite the setback, Hockaday is confident the side will pick up all three points. “Luckily for us, most of the players that play in the futsal team also play in the womens football team on a Wednesday, so we have a good understanding.”
Sunderland’s opponents have found their first season at this level difficult, with two defeats from their two opening games, and a heavy defeat to Newcastle University 1st last week.
It is all to play for today has both teams look to get their season up and running.
