Sixty members of the contingent travelled to Putrajaya yesterday to participate in the nationwide futsal meet where 444 teams from all 222 parliamentary constituencies in the country will compete during the three-day tournament from Nov 16 to 18 (Friday to Sunday).
“We hope to improve on our last year’s performances where we managed to reach round four,” said Sibuti futsal women’s team manager Ajun Othman when asked on the team’s expectations.
Ajun is optimistic of his team’s chances due to the presence of two former national players, and pledged to do their best to advance beyond round four and keep the state flag flying.
Miri Division Youth and Sports officer Mohammad Shukeri Drahman officiated at the handover of team jerseys, after a briefing session by team managers and coaches here.
“They qualified for the national meet by winning their respective Parliamentary-level 1Youth 1Malaysia Futsal Tournaments last month, which are open to youths 15-years and above,” said Shukeri.
According to Shukeri, the players are fully sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports which covered expenses from training to transportation and accommodation for the teams. Thus, the teams only have to focus on their preparations for the tournament.
The 444 teams are divided into two categories – Men and Women, which in turn are divided into 37 groups with each group of six teams who will meet in round one to determine the teams qualifying for the next rounds.
