Press TVIran loses to Columbia, out of 2012 FIFA Futsal World CupMon Nov 12, 2012Iran has lost a match against Columbia in a shock playoff encounter for quarterfinals of the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup and was eliminated from the tournament.
Iran, which was the game’s dominant force, was beaten in a match held at Nimibutr Stadium in Thailand’s capital Bangkok on Sunday.
“Colombia played the entire game with a defensive formation and when they got the ball, they just cleared it away. It was a great day for Colombia goalkeeper and a bad day for us,” Iranian coach Ali Sanei said after the game.
Columbian player Yefri Duque scored the opener in the 30th minute and Angellott Caro’s goal in the 34th minute earned a numerical advantage for Columbia. In the 35th minute, Ali Rahnama managed to pull one back for Iran.
“We didn’t play a perfect match because they created a lot of chances. But we were opportunistic, and scored goals at key moments,” Colombia’s coach Arney Fonnegra said.
In other matches of the day, Portugal trounced Paraguay 4-1, Ukraine beat Japan 6-3, and Spain hammered host Thailand 7-1 to the quarterfinal.
In other playoff matches, on Monday, Italy will play against Egypt, Brazil will face Panama, Russia will take on Czech Republic, and Serbia will encounter Argentina.
The FIFA Futsal World Cup is held every four years, in the even year between two FIFA World Cups. The 2012 edition of the world championship tournament kicked off on November 1 in the Thai capital of Bangkok and will run until November 18.
