The Garstang CourierBringing Barca style to GarstangWednesday 17 October 2012Young footballers across Garstang are to hone their skills by adopting Barcelona’s ‘tika-taka’ style of play.
Football coach and primary school teacher Gaz Elsdon has organised the area’s first junior Futsal match at Garstang Leisure Centre next week in a bid to encourage youngsters to develop their technical skills.
Futsal is an ever-growing format of football that focuses on short passing and movement.
It’s popular in countries around Europe and South America and players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were introduced to the five-a-side game as youngsters.
On Tuesday October 23, Nateby Primary School will take on Dolphinholme Primary School for a 40 minute match.
Gaz who has been teaching footie-mad youngsters under the business Fun-Time Football, said: “My aim is to get a network of primary school teams together who want to play futsal on a regular basis in the Garstang and surrounding areas.
“I am coaching Futsal at both schools this term and to finish the term we are holding this match. The plan is to do the same each term and invite more schools to join the fun. We have a Fun-Time Football Futsal Cup that will be awarded to the winners.”
Each team has two girls in the squad and the rules require that one girl should play in each side during the game. The kick-off for the match at Garstang Leisure Centre in Windsor Road is 3.30pm.
Gaz has been coaching at a local primary school over the past few years and previously introduced ‘Panna’ and freestyle football sessions sessions to improve youngsters’ ball skills.
