Will Hughes gets behind new Derby Futsal project

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

DERBY County midfielder Will Hughes is backing a new Futsal project in the city that aims to develop talent for the club.

Set up by The Movement – a partnership between the Rams and Derby City Council that aims to help young people get fit and healthy – Join the Futsal Revolution is a campaign targeted at boys aged 14 to 19.

It launches at Woodlands School today, with other secondary schools in the city getting involved too. Sessions at Willows and Springwood Leisure Centre are also on offer.

Boys will receive coaching, play in a city-wide competition and could earn the chance to apply to join the Rams' Futsal and Education Scholarship.

Futsal is a five-a-side variant of football, played indoors on a small court and with a small ball.

"Our long-term goal is to create the largest youth Futsal project in England," said Councillor Martin Repton, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture at Derby City Council.

Hughes added: "Futsal is fast, fun and relatively easy to pick up. Some of the world's most skillful players, such as Pele, Messi, Neymar, Zavi, Robinho and Figo, have grown up on Futsal courts."
