KUCHING: Futsal enthusiasts in Kuching now have an alternative venue to play the game following the opening of Vikings Futsal Stadium in Matang yesterday.

The new state-of-the art facility which is located only 50m from Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa and Jalan Matang traffic junction is the product of five years of collaboration between Uhsports Sdn Bhd and Vikings Futsal Association Australia.
The stadium which houses four courts is equipped with Stardlex Gridcourt Interlock flooring which is the first of its kind in Kuching and recognised by Brazilian Futsal Confederation and Chinese Football Association.

This type of flooring is also being used for futsal competitions involving world class teams.
Vikings Futsal Stadium general manager Lesley Lau said apart from providing the courts, other facilities include ample parking, a Coneli sports shop, convenience store, futsal gear rental, players safety lockers, prayer room and a rest room for visitors who do not play futsal.

“In the near future, we also plan to add more facilities such as a conference room, giant TV screen, a mini cafe and others from time to time,” he said.
Lau also hoped that through the cutting-edge stadium, a new generation of Sarawak futsal players could be produced to compete against their counterparts in West Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Vikings Futsal Association Australia president Alistair Miller, who is also chief executive officer of Vikings Futsal International, said futsal was a community sport that greatly promoted social inter-action among the people in the community.
“Futsal is very popular in Australia and we have built many such stadiums using the Starflex Girdcourt Interlock technology in Australia and New Zealand,” he said.

He later performed the opening of the new stadium.
Also present at the opening were Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) vice president Razali Dolhan who represented FAS president Datu Sudarsono Osman, and FAS Futsal and Beach

Soccer Development Committee secretary Mohamad Fuad Mohamad Sapri.
Vikings Futsal Stadium is open daily from 10am to 10pm where the standard rates for rental of courts are RM60 from 10am to 8pm, RM90 from 8pm to 10pm and RM60 from 10pm onwards from Sunday to Thursday.
On Friday, Saturday and eve of public holidays, the rental (standard) is RM60 from 10am to 7pm, RM90 from 7pm to 12am and RM60 from 12am onwards.
